Horse Racing Preview – Haydock – 15th April 2017

Today’s horse racing preview comes from one meeting, Haydock. Some near misses yesterday, and once more it’s the seconditis settling in along with each way money going astray by just under a length. This game is very frustrating with the national hunt winding down and the flat just starting to pick up gradually. So, what is on offer from eight race meetings this afternoon.

If I have to be honest, the entire cards are not that enticing and I have looked over the races and found one race worth getting involved with.

16.20 Haydock Park  – Challenger Stayers Series Final Handicap Hurdle

Probably the most competitive race on the card or even the entire day. There are four that stand out in the race in Fortunate George. Sam Red, Cooking Fat and Behind Time.

Fortunate George representing Emma Lavelle got off the mark at the fourth time of asking for 2017 when winning in good style in a 0-135 handicap Hurdle at Uttoxeter last month. His consistency was well deserved to record his second career win.

With his 6lb rise and quicker ground I do feel he will find one or two too good for him here. Sam Red is still looking for his first success since moving from Alan Fleming’s yard, with reasonable efforts over further index’s which has seen two runners up spots this year at Wetherby & Bangor. This is a new trip this afternoon and again he looks vulnerable off his current mark despite dropping back slightly in trip.

Behind Time bounced back to take a good handicap contest at Cheltenham back in November over 21f, then trainer Harry Fry stepped him up to 24f & 23f respectively which he showed no joy. He drops back slightly in trip to 22.8f this afternoon and even though his last two runs have been a subject of a no show he is still unexposed against some of these that have been out of form.

This brings me in to today’s only selection in Diane Sayer’s Cooking Fat who really caught my eye when winning at Catterick in a 0-125 hurdle. The step up to 25.3f really showed his staying ability last time, slight concern is will this be on the sharp side for him, he has the capability to really get involved in this sizeable pot on offer. Will Kennedy takes over from Brian Hughes this afternoon, he looks solid value in the race.

COOKING FAT : 2pts each way @ 9/1 (BOG)
