Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur
Saturday 17th August 2019
FA Premier League,  Etihad Stadium

Live on Sky Sports Premier League – Kick-Off: 17:30 BST

Premier League champions Manchester City will look to continue their strong form into the new season when they face Tottenham Hotspur in an early-season clash between two of the big six.

City laid down an emphatic marker on the opening day of the season, smashing West Ham United 5-0 in their own backyard. The Hammers could get nowhere near Pep Guardiola’s team, with Raheem Sterling grabbing a hat-trick. The Englishman carried last season’s form, that saw him win the Football Writers’ Player of the Year away, into the new season and looked razor-sharp at the London Stadium.

Gabriel Jesus was given the nod in attack ahead of Sergio Aguero. The Brazilian took his chance with the opening goal to set City on their way. A lot of have speculated that this could be a big season for Jesus as he looks to oust Aguero from Guardiola’s number one striking spot. Who the Spaniard plumps for on Saturday could be a big indication for the rest of the season, given the magnitude of the clash.

Tottenham came from behind to beat Aston Villa 3-1, thanks to Harry Kane’s brace. A debut goal from midfielder Tanguy Ndombele started the comeback before the Englishman opened his account for the season. It seems his August hoodoo is well and truly over.

This match will be a good test for Spurs’ record signing. The Frenchman showed a little bit of everything on his Premier League debut. Strong, quick, athletic, with good feet too. He’s very much a traditional box-to-box midfielder, so it will be interesting to see how he’ll cope against the very best of David Silva and Kevin de Bruyne.

Christian Eriksen was a surprise omission from that match, with speculation swirling around his future. He changed the game when he came on against Villa. With Dele Alli missing, his creativity will be vital for Mauricio Pochettino’s side if they’re to get anything from the game. Although there is clearly a contract war going on behind the scenes, he needs to be on the field whilst Spurs still have him.

Anthony Taylor is the referee for this match. The Englishman racked up an average booking points total of 31.8, across 48 Premier League matches last season. With that in mind, I would recommend a maximum of 50+ booking points for this fixture.

City look imperious, whilst behind-the-scenes drama threatens to derail what is arguably the best squad in Tottenham’s history. With Eriksen in the team, they have a chance, without him those odds dramatically decrease. I’m going for a City win and I think there will be goals.

Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur will be televised live in the UK on Sky Sports Premier League with kick off at 17:30 BST.

Arsenal vs Burnley
Saturday 17th August 2019
FA Premier League,  Emirates Stadium

Live on BT Sport 1 – Kick-Off: 12:30 BST

Arsenal will be looking to back up their opening day win with another three points when they take on Burnley at the Emirates.

The Gunners kicked off their campaign with a 1-0 win at Newcastle United last weekend. With Mesut Ozil missing and Alexandre Lacazette and new signing Nicolas Pepe on the bench, the goal-scoring burden fell on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s shoulders.

The Gabonese striker grabbed the winner in the second half with a clinical finish from close range. Whilst it wasn’t a flawless 90-minute display from Unai Emery’s side, they got the job done, which isn’t something you can often associate with Arsenal. Last season they won away from home and kept a clean sheet once in the entirety of the campaign, so they’ve already matched that feat.

Callum Chambers has resurrected his career at Arsenal throughout pre-season and he started at the heart of the defence next to Sokratis. Deadline Day addition David Luiz was on the bench and it’s tough to see Emery starting the Brazilian for this match after their showing last weekend.

Last season the Gunners were imperious at home. Their top-four push was built on their record at the Emirates, against the so-called ‘lesser siders’. Games like this were meat and drink for Emery’s team, it was against the big boys and away from home where they struggled.

Burnley come into the match off the back of a resounding 3-0 home win against Southampton. Ashley Barnes proved himself a nuisance for the back four bagging a brace against the Saints, who were well off the pace. The Englishman, alongside Chris Wood, have proven themselves as handfuls for any backline at this level.

The Clarets managed to fend off interest for James Tarkowski in the summer, with Leicester City leading the chase for his signature. The former Oldham and Brentford defender has forged a solid partnership in their backline which has helped them keep the goals out.

Mike Dean is the referee for this match. The Englishman racked up an average booking points total of 51.8, across 42 Premier League matches last season. With that in mind, I would recommend a maximum of 60+ booking points for this fixture.

As I’ve already mentioned, games like this were the heartbeat of Arsenal’s top-four push last season. Burnley will be stubborn and they’ll make it hard for the Gunners, which makes an early goal crucial. I’m going to back Arsenal because of their home form but it might be a narrow win, once again.

Arsenal vs Burnley will be televised live in the UK on BT Sport 1 with kick off at 12:30 BST.

Huddersfield Town vs Fulham
Friday 16th August 2019
SkyBet Championship, John Smith’s Stadium

Live on Sky Sports Football HD – Kick-Off: 19:45 BST

Huddersfield return to EFL Championship action as they face Fulham at the John Smith’s stadium on Friday evening.

Only 4 months ago this would have been a Premier League fixture, but off the back of disappointing tenures in the top flight both sides are adjusting to life back in the Championship following their relegation.

The Terriers have picked up where they left off following last season’s dismal campaign in the Premier League where they finished rock bottom. Jan Siewert’s side are without a win in their opening two fixtures, and to add to their sluggish start they were dumped out of the Carabao cup in midweek, losing 1-0 to League 1 side Lincoln City.

If Huddersfield are to grab their first win of the season it won’t be an easy ask. Scott Parker’s Fulham side were one of a handful of sides tipped for promotion, following several promising signings in the summer transfer window. Anthony Knockaert and Ivan Cavaleiro joined on season long loans from Brighton and Wolves respectively to help strengthen the attack alongside Aleksandr Mitrovic, who remained at Cravan Cottage following an encouraging spell last season despite Fulham’s relegation. The same cant be said however, for Ryan Sessegnon. The England Under-21 international put pen to paper on a five-year deal with Tottenham Hotspur, worth up to £25 million.

Mitrovic is one third of the attacking trio to get off the mark this season. Cavaleiro and Knockaert to score anytime is 16/1 on SkyBet.

The Cottagers claimed their first win back in the Championship at the second time of asking. The 2-0 defeat by Barnsley on the opening day was a reality check and a result not many predicted, however last weekends 2-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers got points on the board, as attention now turns to Friday nights fixture.

James Linington is the man in the middle for Friday evening’s Championship clash. Linington appeared 25 times in the Championship last season, awarding 98 yellow cards and 3 red cards in the process, an average of just under 4 yellow cards per match.

Fulham come into the fixture ever so slight favourites, with SkyBet offering odds of 6/4 on an away victory.

Despite Huddersfield’s slow start to the season, I fancy them to get a result on Friday evening. A win against promotion hopefuls Fulham would be the perfect way for the Terriers to get off the mark. Having said that, I do fancy Fulham to score, Mitrovic always offers a threat, so Huddersfield will have to remain focused if they are to keep him quiet and record a clean sheet for the first time this season.

Huddersfield Town vs Fulham will be televised live in the UK on Sky Sports Football with kick off at 19:45 BST.

Prediction: Huddersfield Town 2-1 Fulham

Liverpool vs Chelsea
Wednesday 14th August 2019
UEFA Super Cup Final,  Vodafone Park, Istanbul, Turkey

Live on BT Sport 2 – Kick-Off: 20:00 BST

European Champions Liverpool take on Premier League rivals Chelsea in the Super Cup with both sides looking for their first piece of silverware of the season.

The Reds kicked off their campaign with the perfect opening day result. Their 4-1 win over Norwich City sent a statement to the rest of the league that they are desperate go win their first Premier League title. Mohamad Salah got his season off to a strong start and looked menacing against the Canaries’ powderpuff defence.

Sadio Mane was left out the starting XI, replaced by Divock Origi who got Liverpool’s third. The Malian international had only trained for one week prior to the game so it wasn’t a surprise to see him on the bench. However, after Origi’s strong display, Jurgen Klopp has a decision on his hands for his match. With another tough game at Southampton this weekend, I think Klopp might stick with the Belgian down the left.

Joe Gomez seems to have established himself as Virgil van Dijk’s first-choice partner, edging out Joel Matip. Dejan Lovren look to be on the verge of a move to AS Roma, so the Englishman will be next to the big Dutchman at the heart of the backline.

Chelsea will be hoping for a swift response to their 4-0 drubbing from Manchester United. Frank Lampard has welcomed back Willian and Antonio Rudiger to his squad but N’Golo Kante has a minor knock and is unlikely to play.

The Frenchman was a substitute in the Old Trafford defeat but has aggravated his injury, which is a blow to their hopes. Mason Mount, who was one of the Blues’ best performers on Sunday and is in line for another start against a top Premier League side.

Lampard’s biggest call is at the top end of the field. He has to decide whether to start the dynamic Christian Pulisic against Liverpool, or opt for Ross Barkley as a wide midfielder. Similarly, it will be interesting to see if he sticks with Tammy Abraham upfront, or offers a chance to Olivier Giroud or Michy Batshuayi

Stéphanie Frappart will make history on Wednesday as she becomes the first female referee to take charge of a major UEFA men’s match in Istanbul. She officiated only two Ligue 1 matches last season, brandishing nine yellow cards. With that in mind, I’d recommend a maximum of 60+ booking points for this fixture.

Liverpool and Chelsea couldn’t have had more opposite results at the weekend. Chelsea will be licking their wounds, whilst Liverpool are full of confidence. As a result, I’m going for the Reds, who are the slicker and better all-round side.

Liverpool vs Chelsea will play in the European Super Cup final which will be televised live in the UK on BT Sport 2 with kick off at 20:00 BST.

Prediction: Liverpool 3-1 Chelsea

Manchester United vs Chelsea

FA Premier League,  Old Trafford

Live on Sky Sports Premier League – Kick-Off: 16:30 BST

Frank Lampard will make his Chelsea managerial debut at Old Trafford as they look to get off to the perfect start against Manchester United.

The Red Devils will be hoping to build on last season’s sixth-place finish but will be without the services of Romelu Lukaku after he moved to Inter Milan. Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial will lead the line this season in the Belgian’s absence.

Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire should all make their debut for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side on Sunday. United’s world-record defender needs to hit the ground running at Old Trafford after the club splashed out £80m to bring him to Manchester. The Englishman will line-up alongside Victor Lindelof and hope to make a strong partnership for years to come with the Swedish defender.

James has made quite the impression during pre-season and has featured in every single one of their games. His link-up with Wan-Bissaka down the right has been impressive, with his raw pace and natural width offering United a different threat to the likes of Jesse Lingard, Martial and Alexis Sanchez.

Solskjaer struggled at the back end of last season after being appointed as the permanent manager and he will need a quick start to prove any doubters wrong. He’s had a full summer to implement his style and philosophy on the group, so expect them to try and press high and attack at pace.

Chelsea have a very new look about them under Lampard. David Luiz and Eden Hazard have both left. Christian Pulisic and Matteo Kovacic are their only additions, due to their transfer ban. Lampard will give youth a chance this season, so expect to see Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christiansen and Tammy Abraham all start at Old Trafford.

Upfront is the Blues’ weakest area, with Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi the only competition for Abraham. The future is looking bright, though, with Mason Mount and Callum Hudson-Odoi expected to play major roles in their team this time around. The question will be who will step up to the plate to fill Hazard’s shoes.

Lampard will automatically command respect from his player but it will be interesting to see how they shape up. He favoured a 4-3-3 at Derby County or even a midfield diamond, but Chelsea have mainly operated in a 4-2-3-1 system in pre-season. That should give Ross Barkley license to create, with N’Golo Kante sat next to Jorginho behind him.

Anthony Taylor is the referee for this match. The Englishman racked up an average booking points total of 31.8, across 48 Premier League matches last season. With that in mind, I would recommend a maximum of 50+ booking points for this fixture.

Both teams are going through transitional periods but I’m not sold on Chelsea’s striking options. That could give United the edge, in my view.

Newcastle United vs Arsenal
Sunday 11th August 2019
FA Premier League,  St James’ Park

Live on Sky Sports Premier League – Kick-Off: 14:00 BST

Arsenal will be hoping to get their Champions League push off to the perfect start when they take on relegation-tipped Newcastle United.

The Gunners could offer debuts to David Luiz and Kieran Tierney at St James’ Park, following their Deadline Day transfer from Chelsea and Celtic, respectively. The defensive duo have been brought in to bolster Unai Emery’s leaky defence. Tierney, a long-term target is a snip at £25m, whilst has bags of Premier League experience, although his defending can leave something to be desired.

Either way, they are recruits that will help Arsenal’s ongoing problems at the back. Nicolas Pepe and Dani Ceballos, meanwhile, will offer creativity in midfield and goals in attack. Pepe will join Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in attack to create a formidable front three. It was the latter two that almost single-handedly took Arsenal to the Champions League last season, but their defence, in the end, let them down.

Champions League football is once again the target for Emery and his squad and this time around there will be a much greater pressure on them to reach the top four. With the likes of Mesut Ozil, Pepe, Lacazette and Aubameyang, they could become restless if they aren’t playing in Europe’s elite competition.

Newcastle have had a summer of turmoil of the pitch, with Steve Bruce controversially elected as the man to replace Rafa Benitez. The former Sheffield Wednesday boss has brought in Joelinton for a club-record £40m fee, whilst Allan Saint-Maximin will offer good width down the right-hand side.

Much will depend on how quickly their new Brazilian striker can settle, after the Magpies let Ayoze Perez and Solomon Rondon depart. The club will be pleased to have hung on to youngster Sean Longstaff, who made his Premier League breakthrough last season. He could prove to be a big player for Bruce after they fended off interest from Manchester United throughout the summer.

Martin Atkinson is the referee for this match. The Englishman racked up an average booking points total of 32.8, across 43 Premier League matches last season. With that in mind, I would recommend a maximum of 50+ booking points for this fixture.

It will be interesting to see how Newcastle settle in under Bruce. Their signings on paper, are strong, but the turmoil off the pitch could prove to be a stumbling block. Arsenal, similarly, need to bed in their new additions. I’m going to plump for an away win, but it might be tighter than some would expect.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa
Saturday 10th August 2019
FA Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Live on Sky Sports Premier League – Kick-Off: 17:30 BST

Tottenham Hotspur kickstart their 2019/20 Premier League campaign when they face newly promoted Aston Villa on Saturday evening.

Spurs’ begin the new season bolstered by several new additions, including the highly sought-after Frenchman Tanguy Ndombele, who arrived from Lyon in July. Mauricio Pochettino has strengthened
from last season and will be hoping his squad can take the next step and claim a major trophy, for the first time this decade. Spurs’ 2018/19 season ended in heartbreak as they were beaten in the
Champions League final by Liverpool. However, with the new acquisitions through the door this could be an exciting season for Spurs.

Similarly to previous seasons, the expectance for goals lies on the shoulders of their talisman, Harry Kane. Spurs’ forward line could however have looked very different had Paulo Dybala or Phillipe
Coutinho opted to move to North London. Kane will be keen to add to his tally of 17 league goals last season, averaging a goal every 143 minutes. Kane to score anytime is 8/11 on SkyBet.

Aston Villa are back in the top flight after a three-year absence. Their relegation in 2016 ended a 24-year stay in England’s first division but now under fresh leadership, and with a new identity there is a feeling of optimism with those connected to Villa as the season approaches.

Dean Smith took charge in October 2018 and guided his side back to the Premier League via the Play-Offs, defeating Derby County at Wembley. Off the back of a busy transfer window which
brought many signings, 12 to be exact, Villa could surprise a few people this campaign. Much is expected of Jack Grealish this season after a promising showing in the Championship.
Grealish was part of the Villa side who were relegated in 2016 and will be hoping for a more successful tenure this time round. Grealish registered a total of 12 goals and assists combined last
season, and Grealish is priced at 15/2 to score.

The referee for this fixture is Chris Kavanagh who averaged three yellow cards per game in the Premier League last season, so booking points is a market I would recommend, with 50+ as a
maximum. Neither side will want to lose their first match of the season, obviously. However, I think Spurs’ recruitment has been good, and this will give them the edge over Villa, but I am expecting a close affair.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa kicks off on Saturday evening at 17:30 BST in the UK and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Premier League.

Prediction – Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Aston Villa.

Leeds United vs Nottingham Forest
Saturday 10th August 2019
SkyBet Championship, Elland Road

Live on Sky Sports Football HD – Kick-Off: 12:30 BST

Leeds United will be hoping to make it two wins from two with another impressive performance when they take on Nottingham Forest.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side got off to the perfect start last week as they beat Bristol City 3-1 at Ashton Gate. The Whites wiped away any suggestion of a play-off hangover with a comprehensive win against a top-six rival. Pablo Hernandez was at his sparkling best with a goal and an assist, in a Man-of-the-Match performance.

Patrick Bamford stepped up to the plate by opening his account for the season. The former Chelsea prodigy split opinion during his debut campaign at Elland Road. On one hand, his strike rate is pretty decent, 11 goals in 26 appearances, combined with terrible injury luck. On the other, he can go missing in matches and needs to become more of a dependable target man for his team.

With Kemar Roofe gone, much will rest on the shoulders of Bamford and Tyler Roberts, when fit. Ben White’s Championship debut was as assured as I’ve ever seen, a composed head on young shoulders which have wiped away any concern surrounding Pontus Jansson’s departure.

Nottingham Forest suffered defeat in their opening match of the season, falling through a goal ahead to lose 2-1 to West Brom. The Tricky Trees started the game well but fell away after the opening 20 minutes.

Goalkeeper Aro Muric had a debut to forget at the City Ground but much is thought of the Manchester City prodigy and he will no doubt grow in stature throughout the season. The main issue for new manager Sabri Lamouchi is the volume of players at his disposal. Their squad boasts almost 30 seasoned players, which is way too many for any squad.

Still, there is an abundance of attacking talent to work with. Albert Adomah was an astute free signing and will complement Joe Lolley, Lewis Grabban and, when fit, Joao Carvalho in attack. Still, it may take some time for Lamouchi to work out what his best team is.

Rob Jones is the referee for this match. The Englishman racked up an average booking points total of 33.5, across 42 Championship matches last season. With that in mind, I would recommend a maximum of 60+ booking points for this fixture.

Leeds really impressed me last week. Their new signings slipped right in and they looked refreshed and rejuvenated. Forest, on the other hand, are a team that will take time to gel properly. They’ve got a new manager and a lot of players, it won’t be a quick fix. As a result, I’m going for a home win.

Pep Guardiola’s side begin their push for a third-straight Premier League title. They would be the first club to win the trophy three times in arrow since Manchester United between 2006-2009.

City are still the team to beat and have only made their squad stronger over the summer. The additions of Rodri, Joao Cancelo and Angelino are big upgrades to the team, with all three in line to potentially make their Premier League debuts. The City faithful got a glimpse of their new Spanish recruit last weekend in the Community shield and he impressed in the holding midfield role.

Guardiola named a strong side to face Liverpool last weekend and they won the trophy on penalties. Leroy Sane, strongly linked with a move to Bayern Munich, was forced off injured early on and may miss this game as a result. Gabriel Jesus impressed in pre-season so don’t be surprised to see him start down the middle instead of Sergio Aguero, with Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling on the flanks.

West Ham are looking fresh ahead of the new season. Sebastian Haller and Pablo Fornals are exciting big-money additions, with the latter tipped to be the ‘bargain of the season’ at £20m. Haller has big shoes to fill following Marko Arnautovic’s departure, but the £45m Frenchman will be confident of stepping up to the plate.

The Hammers will be aiming to push for a top-six finish alongside the likes of Everton, Wolves and Leicester City. There are still concerns over their defence, which conceded 55 goals last season. Still, they have reason to hope for an improvement on their 10th place finish.

Mike Dean is the referee for this match. The Englishman racked up an average booking points total of 51.8, across 42 Premier League matches last season. With that in mind, I would recommend a maximum of 60+ booking points for this fixture.

Manchester City looked good last weekend and are still the team to be beaten but I like the look of West Ham, especially going forward. I’m keen to see Fornals and Haller in action and I reckon they could cause City some issues. Still, I’m going for a narrow away win.

West Ham United vs Manchester City will be televised live in the UK on BT Sport 1 with kick off at 12:30 BST.

Liverpool kick-off the 2019/20 Premier League campaign looking to lay down an early marker against newly-promoted Norwich City.

The Reds will be hoping they can close the gap on Manchester City this year after amassing 97 points last term. Jurgen Klopp’s side will be hoping to go one step better and claim their first-ever Premier League title with a perfect start against Norwich.

Last weekend Liverpool lost the community shield on penalties but can take away plenty from their performance. Klopp’s team were, without doubt, the best side in the second half and but for a dramatic clearance from Kyle Walker, they would have won the match.

The Reds made just one summer signing, Adrian, who replaces Simon Mignolet as Alisson’s back-up goalkeeper. Otherwise, it’s the same squad, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain back fit. He and Adam Lallana will be hoping to make a big contribution this season after missing the whole of the last campaign.

Norwich are back in the big time and couldn’t have asked for a tougher opening match. Under Daniel Farke, the Canaries blew away the Championship with their brand of exciting, attacking football.

One concern for the Canaries is their defence, though. Despite winning the title, they conceded 57 goals, more than Birmingham City and Reading, who finished 17th and 18th, respectively.

Last season they relied on out-scoring teams. If they try to do that in the Premier League they will get battered on one or two occasions. Especially at Anfield.

Michael Oliver is the referee for this match. The Englishman racked up an average booking points total of 32.8, across 44 Premier League matches last season. With that in mind, I would recommend a maximum of 50+ booking points for this fixture.

Liverpool will be desperate to get off to a great start and looked sharp last week. Whilst Sadio Mane may not start, Mohamad Salah will lead from the front. Given Norwich’s leaky defence, I reckon the Reds will come away with an eye-catching opening win.
